When I was about 13, my mom sent me to a medical camp where we learned how to do all these skills on mannequins. Shockingly, not only did we learn how to draw blood, but we also learned how to intubate someone! So the lesson we got from our instructor in the Sim Center was very familiar to me. Obviously, intubations are never quick and easy like they are on the still, quite, uncomplicated mannequin. But, it was still very beneficial for all the students to learn and feel comfortable with the intubation procedure. I hope that one day I will be able to use my skills of intubation, but I also would never wish the need for intubation on a patient.
Finally, we also learned how to cath someone! Many nurses will be doing this, but we should still know how to do it. After all my time in the ER and ICU, we watched and learned so much about the different techniques, strategies and general process of inserting Foley catheter's. Honestly, I hope that I will be able to insert a catheter on at least one of my rotations, just to feel more confident in my skills.
