Just like last year, a couple of people from my class of 2017 attended the New York State Society of PA's annual conference. We had about 5 of us (2017's) and nearly 20 people from the class of 2018 attend! It was impressive because we had one of the more well represented schools at the conference.
There were many great lectures, a couple of which were delivered by one of my ER preceptors. He gave a great lecture on using social media to gather new medical techniques and research. An interesting point he made was that it takes about 11 years for guidelines to be updated, 5 years for information to get into text books, and 2 years into publication. With social media, we can communicate with other providers who are using different techniques right now, using new modalities now and seeing results to save more lives. There were many more lectures available where PA's, PA students and Pre-PA's could learn about different things in medicine. A few of my classmates attended an ultrasound lecture (uses in different areas of medicine) and even a burn lecture (on different treatment modalities).
In addition to the many lectures, there was great food, dancing, and JEOPARDY! Medical jeopardy, as described last year, is when teams of three from all different NY PA schools compete to answer medical questions or questions related to the PA profession. We did better this year and made it to a second round! However, we were then beat out in the next round. This year's winners were from Touro in Downstate! I will say that it was more fun this year since I was familiar with a lot of the material. I was surprised to see that I could answer a large majority of the questions! =p
