Recently, I realized that our instructors for our micro/immuno class have been referencing a cute website to present the overview of some conditions. As many of you know, I love drawing and using my artistic skills as a study aid. Being partly a visual learner, I really value artistic demonstrations of any medical condition. This website has some great illustrations to help solidify conditions and isolate the primary pertinent information. If you are curious, I posted the link below. There are not many comic strips but for the ones listed, they are super helpful (like the one below). Something about an emotional connection with topics helps with studying so much. Don't know what I mean? Think about it this way... remember someone you took care of with "x" condition, how that patient presented and how they reacted to treatment. How did they feel? How did it make you feel? This emotional memory is stronger than any plain memorization. For me, this is similar with humor and cartoon drawings. This website just gives another dimension to learning. Instead of memorizing that necrotizing fasciitis is a "flesh eating" disease with x, y, and z symptoms...like many students, I can rely on my clinical experience of having a patient with necrotizing faciitis of their calf muscle ....but with this Medcomic website, I can also PICTURE these cute little skin cubes, the little cocci, clusters, and chains and remember what they looked like when trying to solve a question on an exam to fill in any gaps I had from straight memorizing.
After investigating the website, I noticed that there is a book version for all of these comics that can be purchased for $X if you go on the website. I just started using these comics in my studying and if I find them really helpful, I will definitely purchase the book. Stay tuned to see how helpful these comics are!
By the way, it looks like the author is a PA-C! How cool is that!?
